Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
We recognize that with significant changes, some of you may find it strange to find your way around. It’s a bit like moving house – you’re not sure where to find things, and they may be in places you didn’t expect. Here are some FAQs with answers:
How do I do a Scripture search?
When you click on the ‘Scriptures’ button in the search engine, it gives you two options: Old Testament or New Testament. Click the one you need, and then select the book from the menu beneath. When you click on the book, a chapter menu will appear so you can select which chapter. All the songs tagged for this chapter are then listed by Bible verse. Please note that some songs have no Scripture tags as yet, though we are working to improve this.
Can I only search songs by first line?
You can search by any line of a song, or just a particular phrase and the search engine will find it. If, for instance, your church service has a specific theme such as e.g. ‘Immanuel’ or ‘Redeemer’, a search for either of those words will turn up a rich array of options. Just click on the ‘hymns’ tab and type the word into the search bar.
How do I search for an author or composer?
Click on the ‘Author’ tab and type their surname into the search bar. If you are not sure of the spelling, select the surname initial from the alphabet menu, and click on the author or composer button to refine your search.
How do I search for another tune in the same metre?
Click on the ‘Tunes’ tab, and type the metre into the search bar. Please note, metre numbers need to be grouped either in pairs (e.g. 87 87 D) or for double digit numbers, with a space between each number (e.g. 11 10 11 10).
Can I still search by book number?
Our original blue book was numbered, and we continued this with items published online, numbered from 1000 onwards. Although there is no separate number search, simply click on the ‘hymns’ tab and enter the number of the song into the search bar.
What am I allowed to do with the words or music I download?
For individuals using our website on behalf of their local church, your use is permitted on the following terms: words which are still protected by copyright may be freely downloaded and reproduced, provided that your church holds a Church Copyright Licence and that all reproduction of our works is done within the terms of that licence. Reproduction of music scores may be freely downloaded and reproduced, provided that the church holds a Music Reproduction Licence and that all reproduction of our works is done within the terms of that licence. Please note that when you report your usage to CCLI, you may have downloaded more than one version of a hymn or song, e.g. a piano score, lead sheet and words. Please report each version that you have used. For a more detailed guide on CCLI reporting, see our blog post here. For queries about events and other matters, please contact copyright@praise.org.uk
Why can’t I access the music to download?
If you have paid your subscription for the ‘member’ account, you may find that the website logs you out automatically after a period of non-usage. When you then access the site, you may see a peach-coloured menu asking ‘Would you like access to our downloadable resources?’ If you are already a paid-up member, you do not need to resubscribe. You only need to log in and the menu will disappear, making all our catalogue available for download.
