Under the sun

UNDER THE SUN
we sow and hope to harvest;
we labour on
until the evening darkness
bids us cease,
to rest in peace.

2. Naked we come
into a world that’s broken:
unworthy ones
but, by the word he’s spoken,
fed and dressed,
sustained and blessed.

Under the sun
in vain we search for meaning,
and much afraid
he made our restless souls for dreaming—
O grant us grace,
O God, do not abandon us to fade
under the sun.

3. Under the sun
there is a time for laughter;
and when it’s done,
a time for grieving after:
joy to pain
resolves again.

4. Under the sun
the Fall is all around us—
we are undone!
Let mercy come and find us
sinking there,
beyond repair.

Under the sun
in vain we search for healing:
unholy ones—
how can our hearts regain their feeling,
be born again?
O God, do not abandon us to fade
under the sun.

His only Son:
in weakness he was willing
to overcome
the sentence of our soul’s rebelling;
he gave himself—
our God did not abandon us to fade
under the sun.

His only Son:
in weakness he was willing
to overcome
the sentence of our soul’s rebelling;
he gave himself—
our God did not abandon us to fade
under the sun,
under the sun,

under the sun.
