Jenner, Henry Lascelles

Composer

b Chislehurst, Kent 1820, d Preston-next-Wingham, Eastry, nr Sandwich, Kent 1898. Harrow Sch and Trinity Coll Cambridge LLB 1841. Ordained in 1843, he was a curate at Chevening, Kent; St Columb and St Antony, Cornwall; and Brasted, Kent. After a Minor Canonry at Canterbury 1852–54 he became Vicar of his home village of Preston and held that living until his death some 44 years later. During this time he was appointed the first Bp of Dunedin, NZ, in 1866 (gaining his Camb DD in 1867) but returned to Preston in 1870 and resigned his bishopric a year later. As an author he wrote The Catechism in Verse, and as composer contributed tunes to A&M, one of which became established in wide use. One text is also in the 1889 suppt. No.651=847.
