b Resolven, Glamorganshire, S Wales 1874, d Rhosllanerchrugogg, nr Wrexham, Denbighshire 1948. Not to be confused with his namesakes. Arnold Coll, Swansea; Univ Coll Cardiff; BMus and DMus (Oxford). Organist and choirmaster at Jewin St Welsh Presbyterian Ch London from 1899; Lecturer, Head of Music, then Prof of Music at Univ Coll Cardiff 1903–39. A frequent judge of Eistedfoddau and conductor of Psalmody festivals; edited the musical monthly Y Cerddor 1916–21 and published Moliant Cenedil (‘A Nation’s Praise’), a collection of standard hymn tunes. Composed and arranged much church music (some under the name Edward Arthur) and choral and orchestral works including The Coming of Arthur; chief music ed for the Ch of Scotland’s The Revised Church Hymnary of 1927, and helped edit the music of Llyfr Emynau a Thonau (‘The Book of Hymns and Tunes’) for the Welsh Methodists in 1929. Just before his death he had conducted a choir of 4000 voices. Nos.138, 418, 876.
