(not in Composers’ index in Praise!), b Oswego, New York, USA 1867, d Santa Rosa, Cal. 1944. Syracuse Univ; studied in Europe, then church organist in New York prior to ordination in 1893. Ill health prompted further moves, but served in Denver before returning to music direction in New York. President of American Plainsong Soc; author, Church Music in History and Practice (1937); music ed of several Anglican and other hymnals. A rare blend of sympathy for historic (including Reformation and monastic) hymnody and contemporary American culture. His work is included in the 1985 American classic Rejoice in the Lord but seems to appear in no other British book before Praise!. No.7*.
