b Kent 1837, d Hendon, Middx 1913. A Canterbury Cathedral Choirboy, he studied music under J P Hullah and W H Monk (qv) and trained for ordination at King’s Coll London. Skilled in Heb and Gk, he was awarded the Hon DD (Lambeth, 1881) and wrote several hymn tunes. His best-known has tended to be popular among congregations where the associated text by F R Havergal is most welcome. No.698.
