b Scotland c1840, d Liverpool (or Wallasey, Cheshire) 1925. A poet, composer and mystic whose religious views underwent many changes. In 1911 he published a collection with a title beginning In the heart of the Holy Grail, marked ‘London and Bradford’. He wrote or compiled several other works, some under the name ‘James Macbeth’, including The great peace… (1915) with an equally elaborate title. He also organised a ‘Brotherhood of Healers’ (hence his title ‘Brother James’) and would sing to patients during its sessions. His later years were spent working in a Liverpool children’s home before retiring to nearby West Kirby. No.23A.
