Composer

b Oxford 1843, d Oxford 1883. Oxford BMus 1969; Organist of St John’s Coll Oxford 1875–83, and Conductor of the Oxford Choral Soc; Prof of Music and RAM examiner 1881. He composed a cantata and many songs, dying at the age of 39. His widow lived to the age of 83, remaining in their Broad St home (near Blackwell’s bookshop) which after her death was demolished to make way for the New Bodleian Library. Absent from many standard hymn-books, this composer has become known for one tune featured in The Companion Tune Book, GH etc, as here. No.21.
