1142. Day and night I cry to you

Author: Martin E Leckebusch

Day and night I cry to you:
free me from my gnawing fear;
I am anxious, drained of strength,
marked as one whose death is near-
would I praise you from the grave?
Show me, Lord, your power to save.

2.   How the burden of your wrath
leaves my soul in deep dismay!
Why, so often through the years,
have you turned your face away?
As a prisoner of despair,
am I banished from your care?

3.   Even those I called my friends
now consider me unknown;
driven from my family,
I must bear my grief alone.
In the darkness, asking ‘Why?’
night and day to you I cry.
