b Fenwick, Ayrshire 1766, d Duntocher, Dunbartonshire (Strathclyde) 1824. After village schooling he joined his father in shoemaking, while also studying music and maths and designing sundials. In his 30s he became calculator and draughtsman in a Pollockshaws cotton mill, later doing similar work at Duntocher (also nr Glasgow) where he managed the Secession church and helped to found its first Sunday School. MARTYRDOM is the one tune by which he is known; most of his music mss were destroyed on his instructions shortly before his death. No.14.
