Composer

b Harrogate, Yorks 1896, d Leicester 1979. Educated privately before studying music at York Minster under Dr Edward Bairstow, 1914–16; from there he went to be Organist at St Botolph’s Boston, Lincs (‘Boston Stump’) and gave organ recitals and lectures on music more widely. His main work was at the Cathedrals of Leicester (from 1927) and Lincoln (from 1936). He founded and conducted the Leicester Bach Choir, and for various periods between 1932 and 1974 was an extramural lecturer at Nottingham, Hull and Sheffield. He composed works for piano, organ and choir; MusD, FRCO. No.337=737.
