Martin was born in Motherwell in 1954. He attended Dalziel High School, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Jordanhill College of Education, International Baptist Seminary, Rüschlikon, Switzerland, Universitȁt Zürich, University of Durham, attaining a DipMusEd RSAM; PGCE (music); BD; PhD (theology/New Testament).
He taught music before becoming a Baptist Minister in Jarrow. He moved on to Greenfield Church in Urmston, where he also tutored in New Testament at the Northern Baptist College.
Martin served as the Education officer, then Director of Vocational services, both for the Church of Scotland, before becoming the Council Secretary for Ministries.
Martin is actively involved in a number of singing groups, in particular the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union, where he served as president for 2006-2010.
He holds a season ticket for Motherwell football club and is a keen gardener and embroiderer.
Martin has published numerous articles in a variety of New Testament journals and other sources. His other publications are ‘Sophia and the Johannine Jesus (Sheffield: SAP, 1992) and the ‘Gospel of John’ in Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible (2002).
