b Dittisham, Devon 1579, d Acton, Middx 1658/9. MP for Truro, Speaker in Barebones Parliament, one of Cromwell’s Council of State, Provost of Eton, member of Westminster Assembly. In 1643 he rewrote Whittingham’s (qv) Psalm 23; the House of Commons and the Scots preferred his versions, the Lords favoured William Barton’s, and the Assembly produced a composite version which survived substantially in the 1650 Scots Psalter.
