b Gorbals, Glasgow 1885, d Glasgow 1960. Glasgow Univ (MA) and Trinity Coll Dublin (graduated in music, ARCM); he also studied at York Minster. He became Organist and Choirmaster of the United Free Ch at Fullarton, Irvine, nr Kilmarnock (Ayrshire) and other churches, and in 1913 took up a similar post at Belhaven United Free Ch in the West End of Glasgow. He taught organ, piano and composition at the Roger Scott Academy of Music, and was Music Supervisor for Glasgow schools as well as a popular recitalist. He was on the editorial committee for the Revised Church Hymnary of 1927 which includes 3 of his tunes, and a musical contributor to The Scottish Psalter of 1929. The 1973 CH3 features 3 of his arrangements, 2 of which (including his version of CRIMOND) remain in its 2005 successor CH4. No.23B*.
