b Brooklyn, Connecticut, USA 1833, d Northfield, Minnesota, USA 1913. Originally a Methodist, she attended Oberlin Coll Ohio, marrying Prof John E Miller in 1860. She co-edited a children’s magazine The Little Corporal, published in Chicago, and from 1891 to 1898 was Dean of Women Students at North-Western University, Illinois. She wrote other books including a verse collection From Avalon, and other Poems; and became best-known as the author (words) of the children’s hymn I love to hear the story, written for her magazine. Her one currently published tune (also known by the opening words of the text for which it was composed) features in several evangelical books. No.735.
