Maurus, Rabanus

Author

(not in Praise! index), b 776 or 784, d 856. The possible author of the original Lat of no.522, he was educated under Alcuin (qv), and ordained in 814. He became Abbot of Fulda, Archbishop of Mainz from 847, and the leading theologian of his day. He also wrote many poems and Scripture commentaries, working for more effective training for the clergy and the evangelisation of Germany. His most celebrated hymn is probably also the most often sung of all the older Lat texts, with some notable translations into English from the 17th c to the present.
