Macwilliam, Margaret

Composer

An early 20th-c composer; her only known tune in print was published in the University Carol Book: A Collection of Carols from Many Lands, for All Seasons, edited by Erik Routley in 1961. At that time she was still alive, since no dates are given. MMcW’s tune, ‘here printed for the first time, was composed about 1925 for use at Fonthill School, East Grinstead, with these words’—ie ‘Creator of the starry height’. Frustratingly, this (no.12) is one of the few carols not specifically mentioned in Routley’s 6-page Introduction. Was the composer, perhaps, a teacher at the school? See the brief notes in EP vol 1. No.522.
