b Canterbury, Kent 1834, d Nottingham 1905. A Canterbury Cathedral choirboy (where his father was a lay-vicar) 1844–49, he studied music at Oxford with his uncle Stephen Elvey (another uncle being ex-chorister G J Elvey qv). He was organist and choirmaster at St Columba’s Coll, Rathfarnham (Dublin) in 1856–57, organist of Southwell Minster, Notts, until 1872, and finally from 1876 and for his remaining 29 years at St Andrew’s Nottingham. He founded the Nottingham Sacred Harmonic Society. No.545.
