b London 1710, d St Clement Danes, C London (Middx) 1782. A chorister at the Chapel Royal (under W Croft), he was appointed organist at St Bride’s and St Clement Danes in central London. He sang tenor under Handel in some of the latter’s oratorios. DMus (Cambridge) 1769. As well as his sacred music he composed mainly for the stage, writing songs for Vauxhall Gardens and other entertainments; he assisted Wm Boyce in compiling Cathedral Music (1760–1778). His early music has been judged his best, as that youthful standard was not maintained. No.409=964.
