b Birmingham 1937. King Edward’s Sch, Birmingham; Clare Coll Cambridge; and Mansfield Coll Oxford. He was Tutor and Music Director at Bretton Hall Coll of Education nr Wakefield, Yorks, and shared in the 1960s in the Dunblane Consultations on fresh approaches to hymnody. This was followed by 16 years in the USA. In 1989 he took early part-retirement, remaining as Director of Music at Newton Highlands Congregational Ch and at Andover Newton Theological Sch in Massachusetts. He retired again in 2005, returning to Yorkshire. He chaired the editorial committee for the URC supplement New Church Praise (1975) which featured 4 of his tunes, and prepared the revision of Routley’s English Speaking Hymnal Guide (2005). He began composing hymn tunes in the mid-1950s, and many of his 100-plus compositions appear in Free Church, N American and other hymn-books; 7 are in Rejoice and Sing, 8 in the Anglo- Chinese Hymns of Universal Praise (new edn, 2006). He has been active in the Hymn Societies on both sides of the Atlantic. No.530.
