b 1917. St John’s Coll Durham and Tyndale Hall Bristol; ordained (CofE) 1942. After ministries in the Bristol and Manchester areas he became vicar of All Saints’ Preston, 1949–60, then of St Helen’s, also in Lancashire, until his retirement there in 1988. LTh 1945, BA 1946, Hon Canon of Liverpool from 1971. A keen pianist who often accompanied singing at the Keswick Convention; he served on the editorial committee of the 1965 Anglican Hymn Book and the 1975 Keswick Praise. 5 of his hymn tunes appear in the AHB 1975 tune suppt attached to subsequent printings. Nos.148, 162.
