b Szechwan (Sichuan), W China 1943. King Edward VII Sch Lytham, Lancs, King’s Coll Cambridge (MA 1969), and Regents Park Coll Oxford; ordained to the Baptist ministry 1967. He served first in mid-Cheshire, then as Minister of Downend Baptist Ch Bristol (1971–77), and Tutor at Bristol Baptist Coll from 1977 to 1990, and parttime Lecturer at the Univ, 1984–90 (Oxford MA 1972, BD 1980, PhD Bristol 1997). From 1990 to 1997 he was Secretary of International Affairs for the CCBI and (until 1999) Hon Fellow of New College Edinburgh. Among many publications are his works on D Bonhoeffer (qv, 1984 etc), F Schleiermacher (1987) and John H Oldham (1999), and numerous contributions to theological journals. Another hymn, Father of glory, whose heavenly plan, features in Praise for Today (1974), and Baptist Praise and Worship (1991) on whose Editorial Committee he served.
