b Norwich, Norfolk 1841, d E Dereham, Norfolk 1896. He studied under Zechariah Buck at Norwich Cathedral, where he was a chorister and became asst organist and BMus (Cambridge), 1867. He taught music for a short time at Tonbridge Grammar School, then moved to Bradford as organist of St Luke’s Manningham. He returned to his ‘home’ cathedral as its organist, 1881–86, and then until 1897 held a similar post at St Mary’s Lewisham, SE London. As well as hymn tunes he composed anthems, songs, service settings and piano music. No.235.
